Samsung’s Exploding Galaxy Note 7 Saga Comes To a Halt
While flying in Emirates on an international travel, I happened to hear an announcement from the cabin crew that the Galaxy Note 7 users are strictly not allowed to switch on the phone while the flight. I was perplexed as to why an exclusion to Samsung Note 7? I got an answer today when Samsung announced that it is “temporarily adjusting the Galaxy Note 7 production schedule in order to take further steps to ensure quality and safety matters.”
Samsung has received 92 reports of the batteries overheating in the US, including 26 reports of burns and 55 reports of property damage. Specifically,a battery cell issue have caused some Notes to overheat and start fires. And now the production has come to a halt.
Can you imagine the atrocities caused by Note 7?
One caused the evacuation of a Southwest Airlines flight last week; another hurt a teenage girl. This explosive nature of Samsung Note 7 had lead to a global recall of the product last month. Samsung also worked with government agencies such as the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to get safe replacement units to owners of the phone. The company has said that more than half of its defective phones have been returned and that about 90 percent of people had chosen to trade their old Note 7 in for a new one. US carrier partners, Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile have stopped selling the Note 7 and are letting customers exchange their replacement Note 7 for a different phone entirely.
What is the next step to be taken by Samsung? A second recall?
I think the stars are just not at the right position for Samsung, especially at this time when Apple launched its new iPhones and Google recently introduced its google branded smartphone – pixel, most of Samsung buyers would run to its competitors for a better and reliable smartphone. Not only that the Social media images of charred Note 7 phones have only added credibility to this news.
It is really sorry to say that the life of Samsung Note 7 was short and has left a bitter taste amongst the consumers. Better luck next time! (Luckily, we have the iPhone 7)
