Backwaters of Alappuzha

The Alappuzha backwaters also known as The Venice of the East is truly blessed with lagoons, beaches and canals. This is a major tourist attraction and you have people from all across the globe visiting to enjoy house boat rides across the backwaters. It is situated between the Vembanad Lake and the Arabian Sea with an approximate area of 200Km.You can enjoy the sight of a  variety of aquatic life as well crabs, frogs, birds and many more.

Normally these boat rides are done in Kettuvallams, which are large boats that were earlier used to carry harvested rice across the backwaters. Now they have been transformed to accommodate tourists with dining, sleeping and toilet facilities. You can opt for Luxury, deluxe or standard houseboats as per your budget but make sure you choose an air-conditioned room as the humid climate would require so. But if you wish to go for sightseeing then you can go for the open canoe boats that can have about 4 to 14 people depending on its size. You also can enjoy the local cuisine of this place and see the farming as well fishing activities undertaken here.

The other attractions include the Chembra Peak ,Chethalayam falls, Pakshipathalam, and Banasura Sagar Dam. Kuruva island or Kuruvadweep is monitored by the Kerala Forest Department and can only be reached by boats. There are many rare birds, animals, herbs located here but you require a pass from forest department to enter this region.

Wildlife of Thekkady

Thekkady is situated in Idukki and is another beautiful location which promises to be loved by all. Agricultural plantations like tea, coffee and cardamom can also be spotted in this region .The Periyar National Park is the most famous one here and is in abundant grasslands and vegetation. The park has about 35 species of mammals which include Nilgiri langur, jungle cat, sloth bear, Nilgiri tahr, Indian giant squirrel, Travancore flying squirrel and lion-tailed macaque. Some extinct animals like Bengal Tiger has also been protected in this reserve.

Bekal is another holiday spot which is popular and has tourists coming in from all places. The Bekal fort is located in Kasaragod district and is spread over 40 acres. The panoramic view from this fort is splendid and the sands appear to be clean. As it’s a tourist spot and you have people coming it to see this wonderful place, many amenities have also been arranged accordingly .The sunset time would be the best time to spend here and even after dusk the place is lighted for a few more hours.

Island of Vypeen

Vypeen is a beautiful island which is located at a distance of 1.8Km from Kochi. From colonial times the Portuguese had an influence on this land and even today you can see Anglo Indians living here .They still speak Creole an ancient Portuguese language. The Cherai beach is the highlight of this island and it is one of the longest beaches to be found in Kochi. The Kuzhuppilly Beach and the Puthuvype Beach are also located here. Church of Our Lady of Hope is a famous religious spot visited by tourists here. The Pallipuram fort also called the ayikkara or Aliotta was built by the Portuguese somewhere in 16th century. The hexagonal shape of this structure makes it look quite distinct from the others.

Nelliyampathy is located in Palakkad and is surrounded by hills that add to its beauty. Some of the ranges are from 467 m to 1572 m and is definitely a good view to see. This is a commonly sought place by couples for honeymoon and the climate here is pretty pleasant too. The roads are pretty narrow and it has around 10 hairpin bends on its route. There is tea, coffee, cardamom cultivation here and you can also see orange farming too. There is a bio farm and a charming bungalow dated to time of British rule which has now been transformed to a resort. Athirappally waterfalls is a major tourist spot in Trissur and is pretty famous for its scenic beauty.It is the largest waterfall of Kerala and is also referred to as the Niagara of India. This majestic waterfall is about 80 feet in height and after this it joins the Chalakkudy river. The view of the water splashing against the rocks and the dense forests gives it a beautiful view. Bike riders are also common tourists here and they do like to ride along the curvy roads. As a safety precaution the slippery rocks can be pretty dangerous so be careful as you cross to the waterfalls. Near to this there is Vazhachal falls which is located on the west flowing Chalakudy river. It is also another popular destination for tourists.
