How to Get Canada Permanent Residency

Canada makes an ideal destination for people looking for a great quality of life, with the country providing ample jobs and great cities to reside in, and three Canadian cities even featuring in the list of top 5 most livable cities in the world, according to an article on CBC News. In addition, the free basic healthcare, low crime rate and the immigrant friendly nature of the country attract a huge number of immigrants to Canada each year.

However, to live in Canada on a long-term basis, you need to get permanent residency. Here’s what you need to know about that.

How to Get Canadian Permanent Residency

Over 200,000 people are allowed to enter Canada as permanent residents each year. An individual who becomes a permanent resident of Canada receives a wide variety of opportunities and benefits. With a permanent residency (PR) card, you can live, work and study in Canada for as long as you wish to. The issued card is valid for 5 years at a time, after which it can be renewed.

The various categories under which one can get permanent residency in Canada include:

  1. Skilled Immigration Program:
This program is suitable for skilled and qualified immigrants. Parameters such as educational qualifications, language abilities, work experience, etc., are used to evaluate your eligibility for the program.
  2. Business Immigration Program:
This category is suitable for those who are entrepreneurs, investors or self-employed persons. This program is mainly aimed at bringing in investment and business to Canada.
  3. Provincial Nominee Program:
Here, a province is allowed to nominate an individual, according to its own criteria and requirements. However, the province of Quebec is not included in this program.
  4. Family Class Immigration Program:
Permanent residents of Canada can sponsor relatives for permanent residency in Canada. Almost one-third of all immigrants coming to Canada come under this program.
  5. Quebec Skilled Workers Program (QSWP):
QSWP is one of the Provincial Nominee Programs of the Canadian government. Under this program, Quebec selects immigrants according to its specific requirements.
  6. International Adoption:
Residents of Canada are legally allowed to adopt children from other countries. The family adopting the child needs to sponsor them for a long period of time, ensuring their well-being.

In order to obtain Canadian permanent residency, you will first need to fill the Canadian Permanent Residency Form, pay the application fees and attend the interviews with the immigration officials at the Canadian embassy in your home country.

Along with this, you will also need to submit some key documents, such as:

  • Medical certificate and a criminal record check.
  • Original documents and copies of your educational certificates, including college degrees and diplomas.
  • Proof that you have sufficient finances to fund your initial stay in the country.
  • Skill assessment test results
  • Results of the language test

All the documents and the form should be checked carefully before submitting, since any inconsistency in information or incomplete details could put a spanner in the works. For further information, it is advisable to contact the Canadian embassy in your home country.
