Many of us are looking for ways to lose weight and have a slim body. We try out different weight-loss supplements, diets, and workout regimens that do not seem to do anything as far as losing weight are concerned.
The fact is that we do not realize that it is our little daily habits that prevent us from losing weight. To effectively lose weight, all you need to do is avoid a few habits that you have developed over the years. It will not be easy for many of you but if you are willing to give it a go, it is a good start!
Habits that make you fat
Sitting for too long: I know that many of you cannot help this habit especially if you have a desk job. However, you can take a break every few hours and walk around your office for a couple of minutes. Sitting for long periods of time increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. The bottom line is that you need to keep yourself vertical as much as possible and you will be able to keep away the weight gain and many diseases as well.
1. Not eating enough
Yes, I know how that sounds but that is the truth. Many of us believe that starving ourselves will help us lose weight and it is not completely wrong. The fact is that when you start your regular diet again, you are likely to gain double the weight that you lost. It is best to have a healthy nutritious meal and eat small portions of food at regular intervals throughout the day so that your body gains the fuel it needs to function properly. This is a much smarter idea than starving yourself.
2. Not drinking enough water
You need to take adequate water in a day to ensure that your body functions properly. So, the more water you drink, the higher the chances of you staying slim and trim. In a study conducted by the University of Utah, participants who were on a diet were told to drink 2 glasses of water before each meal and it was found that they lost 30 percent more weight than participants who did not drink water.
3. Not eating enough home-cooked meals
If a large part of your diet comes from outside food, you are not likely to lose weight but instead gain more. You are also more likely to develop heart-related diseases when you eat out too often. A recent study showed that women who ate in a restaurant once a week lost roughly 5 pounds less than women who rarely eat out. Another recent study showed that eating a fast-food meal just once a week increases the risk of dying from cardiac disease by 20 percent. If you want to lose weight and live long, make sure that at least 90 percent of your diet comprises home-cooked meals.
4. Eating just before bed-time
If you eat too late, or just before you go to bed, your body cannot burn the calories. This is because it is busy processing all the food that you just took in. A study was conducted on 52 participants and their daily eating habits were observed. It was found that the highest calories were taken by the participants who ate after 8 pm. These participants also had the highest Body Mass Index (BMI). It is important to make sure that you always eat well before bed-time to give your body enough time to process the calories and burn them.
5. Emotional eating
One of the mistakes that we often make is letting our emotions dictate our eating habits. Of course, when you have had a bad day, there is nothing like comfort food to make you feel better. It becomes like an addiction and instead of healthy foods, we crave for fattening foods like ice-cream, cookies, junk food, etc. Next time you are feeling down, think before you eat anything. Instead of ice-cream or a pack of potato chips, make yourself a healthy snack. It is important that you break the cycle of unhealthy eating during emotional distress. This will go a long way in helping you lose weight.
6. Eating white bread
If you want to lose weight but are not successful, think about the bread you are eating. Do you eat more white bread? If you do, it may be time to switch to whole-grain bread. A study conducted by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that obese participants who included whole grains in their diet were able to lose more fat from their abdomen in a period of 12 weeks. This is mainly due to the fact that whole grains contain more fiber and have more nutritional value.
6. Excessive TV-watching
A recent study found that overweight people who cut down their TV time by half were able to lose an extra 119 pounds. Keeping yourself busy with other activities and chores around the house can go a long way in helping you lose weight. When you cut down on TV, you also automatically stop snacking on junk food, as it is something that goes hand-in-hand with TV watching.
7. Doing no Exercise
If you are not physically active, there is every possibility that you will become obese & fat. It is advised that you take at least a brisk walk early in the morning.
These are the 9 habits that can make you fat. If you want to stay slim and trim, get rid of these habits and start living a more active and healthier lifestyle starting now.
