13+ Best Google Reader Alternatives

So, Google Reader is gone! Now, what? Fret not. There are several Google Reader alternatives out there that will continue to do the job for you, sometimes even in a better way. Here are some of the best ones.

Google Reader Alternatives for iPad

Here is a list of top RSS Feed readers for iPad that I found interesting.

1. Slide Reader

This is an amazing RSS reader application that stands out from the rest in many aspects. Great UI, great functions and a very powerful app that never crashes. How can I be so sure? Because I tested importing my thousand odd feeds into it and while many other “top rated” apps crashed, Slide Reader did a far better job of intelligently pulling them in.

2. Reeder

Probably the most popular RSS feed reader out there, this guy does a tremendously good job in syncing up with Google. A very interesting UI (I personally dislike it) and great features!

3. News Rack

Probably the most priciest RSS reader out there, this guy impresses me with its UI and efficiency in pulling out each feed. And yes, that newspaper style design is the highlight. I found it to be a little clunky when dealing with high volumes of RSS feeds though.

Web Based Google Reader Alternatives

4. Liferea

This app supports offline reading and has a clean and easy to use UI. The best part is that it supports Google Reader labels. So, if you are like me and have multiple labels under which you’ve categorized feeds, just download the entire Google Reader data and import it in here. Probably, the next best thing!

5. Speed RSS Reader

Though the name suggests speed, I didn’t find this guy that speedy. However a good one that takes care of all your feeds in pretty much the same fashion as you kept it in Google Reader.

6. Strymr

This is an awesome web based RSS reader that will impress you in the very first minute of using it. Not a fancy one but a great UI with thumbnails and excerpts make it easy to navigate between news feeds. Very much recommended.

7. Superfeedr

One of those lesser known RSS feed reader out there that hasn’t got the attention it actually deserved. With both publisher and subscriber functions, this guy has some really neat and advanced capabilities in there.

8. My Syndicaat

my-syndicaat

No, that wasn’t a spelling mistake. My Syndicaat has a neat web based RSS news reader service that can do quite a lot like Google Reader. What I like the most is the ability to sort and arrange between folders.

9. Feedly

Update: Looks like Feedly has been expecting the Google Reader shutdown for quite some time now, and they’ve been working on a project called “Normandy”, which will basically ensure you smooth transition from Google Reader to Feedly. Great move! < More info here.

Feedly is an RSS news reader re-imagined for android phones and tablets. It makes browsing faster: the content of your rss feeds are transformed into pocket-sized cards which load very fast and are easy to browse. I love feedly for its lovely UI.

10. NewsRob

NewsRob is an RSS/Atom newsreader that auto syncs (two way) with Google Reader. The highlight – it only shows unread items at the top making it easy for you to sieve through unread items. Quite intelligent!

11. Pulse News

One of the most popular RSS news feed aggregators for Android. Amazing UI, intelligent sorting – those are things I like. What I don’t like? Sometimes it runs sluggish, especially when there are several feeds.

12. Feed Me

This is an alternate Google Reader RSS reader app. No fancy UI stuff, not very fast loading but simple and easy to navigate. Highlight? Offline reading.

13. Fever

feedr

With an amazing UI, this app does a far more intelligent job at sorting and collecting data based on your interest and reading habits, uhh..well unlike many popular apps out there.

Bonus

Here are some additional RSS Feed readers that you might be interested in. I can’t vouch for them, for most of them have discontinued support and are deprecated.

  1. Feedjack
  2. Pass Project
  3. Pluck
  4. Raggle
