How To Get Rid of Heartburns – 5 Tips

Heartburn is a strange and uncomfortable condition, in which the stomach acids flow upwards into the esophagus, thus causing a burning sensation. While it is true that there are many over-the-counter medications to take care of the same, many natural remedies are equally effective. In this post, we have mentioned few such tips which work wonders for getting rid of heartburns.

1. Drinking water and eating healthy

There are certain foods which make the heartburn worse. Spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine and carbonated drinks are few of the things that increase the acid content in the stomach. Hence, eating healthy holds the secret for staying fit. Drinking water washes the acid down into the stomach thus reducing the burning sensation in the chest.

2. Standing upright

Standing upright often helps in sending the acid back to the stomach. Hence, whenever you experience heartburn in the middle of the night, get up from the bed and stand upright for a few minutes. This would surely better your condition.

3. Drinking vinegar

If you are suffering from heartburn, a tablespoon of vinegar would definitely be of help to you. Generally, the esophagus is supposed to restrict the upward flow of acid, but when it fails to do its job, a little amount of acid (in this case, vinegar) trickling down the throat, would help esophagus get back to its normal self and start functioning properly. This method would surely cause a burning sensation for a couple of seconds because of the intake of vinegar, but it would cure the heartburn.

4. Say no to milk

There is a common misbelief among people that milk cures heartburns. In fact, it does the opposite. Whole milk contains very high amounts of proteins and fat, which actually add to the production of acids in the stomach.

5. Baking soda

It is the hydrochloric acid in the stomach which actually helps in food digestion. Thus, when you start experiencing heartburns, you require a base compound to neutralize the effect. This is where baking soda comes in handy. A glass of water mixed with sodium bicarbonate helps in bringing down the pH level of the acid thus allowing you to breathe easy.

The above mentioned tips would thus help you get rid of heartburn. However, if the condition persists or you experience the same twice every week, you should consult the doctor. Such persons have every chance of suffering from Acid Reflux Disease, which if unchecked may lead to esophageal cancer.
